About MaddenRatings.net
Welcome to MaddenRatings.net, an independent sports video game ratings and history website created for fans who want to explore how player and team ratings have changed throughout the history of sports video games.
MaddenRatings.net was originally created on December 7, 2012 with a simple idea: preserve an increasingly difficult-to-find part of sports video game history and make it easier for fans to explore.
As new editions of video games are released, older ratings and roster information can become increasingly difficult to find online. MaddenRatings.net is designed to preserve that information in an organized, searchable resource that can be used by Madden fans, sports video game historians, researchers, and anyone interested in comparing players across different eras.
What Is MaddenRatings.net?
MaddenRatings.net is a fan-created database and research resource covering player ratings, team ratings, rosters, attributes, and historical information from sports video games.
The site began with Madden NFL and has expanded to include historical information from other football and basketball video game franchises.
Our Madden section currently includes releases dating back to Madden NFL 98, allowing visitors to explore ratings from multiple generations of the franchise. The site also includes historical information from NCAA Football, NBA 2K, NBA Live, and several other sports video games.
Why Preserve Video Game Ratings?
Player ratings are a unique part of sports video game history. A player's rating can provide a snapshot of how that player was represented in a particular year of a game. As players develop, reach their prime, change teams, or finish their careers, their video game ratings can change dramatically.
Looking at those numbers over time can reveal interesting trends. A rookie may begin his career with a modest rating and eventually become one of the highest-rated players in the game. A longtime superstar may spend several seasons near the top of the ratings before eventually declining. Teams can experience similar changes as their rosters are rebuilt.
MaddenRatings.net preserves these changes so they can be compared across years.
Madden Ratings History
One of the most important parts of MaddenRatings.net is the historical database. Rather than focusing exclusively on the newest Madden release, the site maintains information from many previous versions of the franchise.
This makes it possible to explore questions such as:
These historical comparisons are a major part of what makes MaddenRatings.net different from a website focused only on the current year's ratings.
How the Database Is Organized
MaddenRatings.net organizes information by game, player, team, roster, and historical release. Visitors can begin with a specific Madden release and then explore individual teams and players. The player database can also be used to find information about individual athletes and compare their ratings across different versions of the game.
For newer releases, the database includes overall ratings and individual attributes when that information is available.
Older releases are preserved separately so that the history of the franchise can remain accessible even as newer games are released.
Original Analysis and Editorial Content
The database is only one part of MaddenRatings.net. The site also publishes original articles and commentary about sports video game ratings, roster changes, player trends, historical comparisons, and interesting developments across the sports gaming world.
These articles are intended to provide context around the numbers rather than simply reproduce a list of ratings. For example, a Madden ratings release can be examined by looking at the players who entered the 99 Club, the players who experienced the largest increases, veterans whose ratings declined, surprising team ratings, and changes from previous Madden releases.
The goal is to help visitors understand the information in the database and discover interesting stories within it.
How Ratings Information Is Presented
MaddenRatings.net primarily focuses on the default or launch ratings associated with individual game releases. When additional roster updates or files are available, they are identified separately from the original launch information whenever possible.
Because sports video games can receive updates and corrections, ratings can sometimes vary depending on the version of a roster or the date on which the information was recorded.
Historical information is presented as a reference for fans and researchers, and visitors are encouraged to contact the site when they identify an error or discrepancy.
An Independent Fan Resource
MaddenRatings.net is independently operated and is not affiliated with EA Sports, Electronic Arts, 2K Sports, the NFL, the NBA, or NCAA.
The site exists because of a long-standing interest in sports video games and the history of player ratings.
The purpose is to make historical information easier to find and explore while providing original commentary, comparisons, and organization around that information.
A Growing Historical Archive
MaddenRatings.net began in 2012 and continues to grow as new sports video games are released and older information becomes harder to locate.
The database is an ongoing project. New releases, historical information, roster updates, corrections, and additional research can continue to expand the archive.
The long-term goal is to create one of the most useful free resources available for exploring the history of sports video game ratings.

- Which teams were the highest rated in different Madden releases?
- How have player attributes changed across different generations of the game?
- Which players experienced the biggest rating increases or decreases?
